Day trip from San Juan to Culebra: how it actually works
Three departure points, none of them the capital
There is no ferry from San Juan to Culebra. The operator runs from Marina Dr. Roosevelt Roads in Ceiba to Pedro Márquez Street on Culebra. You get yourself to Ceiba, and the drive across the island is the first hour of your day rather than an afterthought. The getting-there page lays out all three routes.
Parking at the lot near the Ceiba terminal is a flat rate for 24 hours and it runs a shuttle van to the building. Remember that you are asked to be at the terminal an hour before your sailing, and that check-in closes ten minutes before departure — those two rules are what turn a relaxed drive into an early start.
Flying, which is the only thing that really starts in San Juan
Cape Air flies San Juan (SJU) to Culebra (CPX), which is Benjamín Rivera Noriega airport. The airline’s own page advertises the route from under a hundred dollars — treat that as a starting fare.
For the number of flights, flight time and aircraft, check with the airline. The flight also lands you at the airport rather than at the beach, so the 2.5 miles across the island is still on your plate.
The boat trips, and where they really leave from
Every shared boat trip sold on this site except two departs Fajardo, not San Juan and not Ceiba, at meeting points in Puerto del Rey Marina or at Villa Marina. Prices run between one and two hundred dollars a head for about six hours. Flamenco Beach is not guaranteed on any of the seven products, and two of them say so in their own words on the boat-or-ferry page.
You make your own way from the capital to the marina, and one reviewer staying in the old city gives the practical version: “we added the pick up drop off for this but honestly we should have taken an uber because we ended up being the first ones on and last ones off so it really did extend drive time… if you’re staying in old same juan and doing this activity, I suggest to uber.”
The two trips that start on Culebra are rated 4.7 from 4 ratings on one and 4.6 from 10 on the other. The two Culebra-based trips are not options for a reader still in San Juan anyway: they check in on the island, and one of them says so on its own page — “To reach Culebra, the adventure starts by ferry or airplane.”
